BIOGRAPHY
Pernille With Madsen was born in 1972 and lives and works in Copenhagen. She received her MA from Jutland Art Academy (2003). Solo exhibitions include the International Centre for Contemporary Culture, Spain (2017), The Lipsius Building, Belgium (2012) and Horsens Kunstmuseum, Denmark (2010). She has exhibited in several group exhibitions including Contour 6th Biennale of the Moving Image (2013), Brandts, Odense, Denmark (2008) and Guandong Museum of Art, Guangzou, China (2008). With Madsen was awarded the Danish Art Councils 3 Year Work Grant (2010).
Dissolution, imbalance, disorientation, collapse and loss of control are core themes in Pernille With Madsen’s work. Through video, photography, drawing and installation With Madsen creates various impossible, but insisting experiments, which each in their own way, produce scale-related spatial disorientation in the spectator. Through simple, but often difficult and backwards measures, the artist creates a universe, which affects the spectator both visually, physically, and mentally – causing sense of forfeiture through dizzying euphoria and spatial dissolution. Besides the physical, almost phenomenological, effect With Madsen’s works have on the spectator, the artist also aims to dissolve the symbolic and authoritative values of architecture to expose the underlying structures that saturate space and architecture.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The basis of my artistic practice is the sculptural relationship between the two- and three-dimensional. The relationship between a flat surface (a screen, a window, or a piece of paper) and the physical space one occupies. A relationship, which is blissful confusing in for instance when working with video, wherein a recognizable (3D) space is reproduced on a 2D screen.
